Everything about a large display follows from that geography. The audience on a riverside surface includes people queueing to cross; the industrial customers, Đuro Đaković foremost among them, occupy large sites on the town's edge with their own gates and yards; and the pedestrian trade concentrates on the Korzo, well away from the traffic. Three different distances, three different screens.
Walk the site with a tape measure before anything is drawn
The module grid decides the dimensions, not the sketch
Take the width and height of the space that is genuinely available, not the space you would like. Our modules are mounted in landscape orientation and measure 32 centimetres across by 16 high, so a finished wall is a whole number of modules in each direction: multiples of 32 centimetres wide, multiples of 16 centimetres tall. That single fact resolves most of the arguments that otherwise happen later. Round the available space down to whole modules in both directions and make up the remainder with a surround or a reveal. A screen of 5.12 by 2.88 metres is sixteen modules by eighteen and is an ordinary size; 5 by 3 metres is not a size at all. Where the screen goes into an opening that a builder is preparing, the two dimensions have to be reconciled on paper before either the frame or the modules are ordered.
Take the viewing distance from the nearest reader, then check the furthest
Pitch is a distance decision, not a quality decision
Pixel pitch, the spacing between neighbouring diodes, is set by whoever stands closest. Inside a showroom, an office reception or a shop where people are within two or three metres, 1.5 to 2.5 millimetres keeps small text and detail solid. At five to fifteen metres, which covers most interior halls and covered concourses, 2.5 to 4 millimetres is the appropriate band. Outdoors the numbers relax. A wall read from across a road, from a factory yard, or from a queue of vehicles thirty metres back works well at 4 to 8 millimetres, and the coarser spacing brings more brightness, better mechanical strength and a lower price for the same area. Having fixed the near limit, check the far one for a different reason: if the furthest viewer is a hundred metres away, the constraint is character size on the content rather than pitch on the hardware.
Decide indoor or outdoor by exposure, not by which wall it is on
IP65 and 5,000 nit, or a sealed room and 750
A screen under a deep canopy, in a gateway or behind a shop window is still outdoors as far as moisture and temperature are concerned, and specifying it as an interior unit because it is technically under a roof is the most expensive shortcut available. An exterior specification means IP65 sealing on both faces, an operating brightness of 4,500 to 5,500 nit, downward-facing cable glands and a housing that manages condensation. The Sava valley makes that last point matter. Like the Drava plain further east, this is a landscape that produces persistent damp and long freezing spells, and the practical enemy is not rain but the moisture that condenses inside a poorly ventilated cabinet after a cold start. Indoor screens are a different product from the same tiles: 700 to 800 nit, a finer pitch because the audience is closer, and no weather sealing to pay for.
Route the power properly and let the signal find its own way
HDMI beside the screen, or a schedule over Wi-Fi
Power has to be brought to the screen position as a dedicated circuit sized for the peak load, and there is no way around that. The signal is a much easier problem than most people assume. A live HDMI input from a player, a computer or a camera mixer standing near the wall covers anything happening in real time; a stored playlist inside the controller covers everything scheduled. That playlist is refreshed over the network, from a USB stick or over Wi-Fi, and the wireless route is what saves the work. No data cable needs to be pulled from an office to the display, which on an older building or across a factory yard can be the largest single line in an installation quotation. Content can therefore be changed from a desk in another building, or from another country, while the only physical connection to the screen is its electricity.
Establish which side of the river the site is on before quoting the logistics
