Most towns argue about where a large display should go. Škofja Loka largely settles the argument in advance. The upper and lower squares, Mestni trg and Spodnji trg, were declared a cultural monument of national importance in 1987, and the frontages there are among the best preserved medieval elevations in the country. A permanently mounted picture surface on those walls is not a design proposal we would put forward, and we would rather write that plainly at the top of the page than let an enquiry run for three weeks before somebody says it. The buildable addresses in this town lie elsewhere, and there are more of them than the old core suggests.

Can a fixed surface go on a frontage inside the protected core?

The short answer, and why we give it early

Within the monument designation of 1987 the elevations of Mestni trg and Spodnji trg are protected as a group, and interventions on them are subject to conservation consent that we neither apply for nor influence. Our position is straightforward: we do not encourage clients to design a mounted picture surface for those walls, because the probability of it being acceptable is low and the design work is wasted. Where a business inside the core wants a moving image, the realistic routes are an internal surface visible through the shop glass or a free standing wheeled unit, both of which are covered further down.

Which addresses in Škofja Loka can carry one?

Trata, Poden, the approach roads and the interiors

The industrial zone at Trata is where the volume is. Roughly three thousand people arrive there daily to work for employers including Knauf Insulation at Trata 32, LTH Castings and SIBO G, and internal communication surfaces in canteens, entrance halls and production corridors are ordinary, unremarkable installations with no heritage dimension at all. The commercial and service premises at Poden and along the approach roads are conventional modern frontages. Reception areas, showrooms and meeting rooms anywhere in the municipality are interior work. None of these positions raises the questions that the two squares raise.

How does the 32 by 16 centimetre grid decide the finished size?

Whole modules, always laid landscape

The surface is composed of modules that are 32 centimetres wide and 16 centimetres tall, and they are never rotated. Width is consequently a whole multiple of 32 and height a whole multiple of 16, which is why a finished dimension is almost never a round number. A canteen wall with 3.6 metres of clear width takes 352 centimetres of picture, that is eleven modules, not 350. When we survey a room at Trata we record the clear opening, the obstructions, the position of the nearest luminaire and the ceiling height, then propose the largest buildable rectangle that leaves service access at the edges.

What pitch does a works canteen need, and what does a shop window?

Measured from where the nearest person stands

Pitch follows viewing distance and nothing else. A surface in a canteen queue or a reception, read from two to four metres, wants P1.5 to P2.5 so that text stays clean at close range. A display across a production hall or a car park at eight to fifteen metres sits comfortably in the P2.5 to P4 band. Anything read from twenty five metres or more, such as a surface facing the approach road, can be P4 to P8 and should be, because the money saved on pitch is better spent on brightness and on the enclosure.

Does a rolling LED poster solve the old town problem?

640 by 1920 millimetres, 45 kilograms, nothing fixed to anything

In many cases it does, and this is the single most useful thing we can tell a business inside the core. The LED poster is an upright display carried on castors; the picture area measures 640 by 1920 millimetres, the frame stands 201 centimetres high, and the whole unit weighs 45 kilograms. It stands inside the premises, behind the shop glass or in the entrance, and plugs into a normal socket. Nothing is drilled, no scaffold appears in the square, no access platform blocks a lane, and no structural opinion is needed. At 429 kilometres the practical difference is stark: a mounted installation here consumes a day of preparation, a night in a hotel and two days of crew time, whereas a poster arrives on a pallet and is showing something inside an hour.

What happens when one poster is not enough?

Five units, 320 by 192 centimetres, 225 kilograms

The posters chain. Their controllers are designed to be sequenced, so units placed side by side behave as one continuous picture rather than as separate screens showing the same thing. Five units is where most customers settle; at 64 centimetres apiece they add up to 320 centimetres across by 192 high, an aspect ratio near enough to sixteen by nine to carry video, with a combined mass of 225 kilograms and a nominal ceiling of 4 kilowatts. That matters at the ordering stage, because it means a company at Trata can buy one unit for a reception this year and extend the same family into a hall surface later. Four builds share that frame: P1.5 GOB and P2 GOB where people stand close, an indoor P2.5, and a weatherproof P2.5 cabinet. The indoor types work at 700 to 800 nits; the sealed one reaches 4500 to 5000.
