Šibenik is unusual among Croatian coastal cities in that it is built up a slope rather than along one. The town climbs from the Riva and Poljana through stepped lanes towards the fortresses of St Michael and Barone, which means that a permanent display here is very often looked at from above or from below, at an oblique angle and from a distance nobody would guess by looking at a plan. Add the two inscribed monuments - St James's Cathedral in the centre and St Nicholas Fortress out in the channel of St Anthony - and the historic core turns into a place where fixed screens are not the instrument of choice. The market for a built display sits elsewhere: the approach to the Šibenik Bridge on the D8, the retail area around the Dalmare centre, the Šubićevac district, the resort and congress complexes at Amadria Park, and the marina at Mandalina.
Where in a town built on a hillside does a fixed screen actually read?
Sightlines that run up and down rather than across
On level ground you site a screen by walking backwards until the whole of it is comfortable. In Šibenik that method fails, because the reader is frequently thirty metres away and eight metres below, or on a stair looking up at forty-five degrees. Two consequences follow. First, the vertical viewing angle of the modules matters more than usual, and a product that is excellent head-on can be disappointing from a stair. Second, an apparently short horizontal distance often conceals a long true sightline. We therefore measure the actual line from the two or three positions where people really stop - the top of a flight of steps, a car park entrance, the far side of a junction - rather than from the pavement immediately below the wall.
How much does 651 kilometres change the way a job is planned?
A travelling day, an overnight and a shorter working day
Šibenik is 651 road kilometres from our workshop in Győr, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. A fitted installation is planned as a two-day operation: the crew travels and prepares on the first day, stays overnight, and works a full day on the second, with access equipment booked locally so that it is standing at the address when they arrive rather than following them down. Surveys are batched with other Dalmatian work where the calendar allows. The consequence for you is not that the job costs a fortune, but that it cannot be improvised - and that the travel and subsistence are itemised on the quotation as their own lines rather than being buried in the square-metre price.
What does the sea atmosphere do to a permanent installation?
Salt aerosol, stainless fixings and the parts that give up first
The enclosure specification for the coast is IP65, as it is inland, but the failure mechanism is different. Salt aerosol carried on the wind attacks fastenings and any junction between dissimilar metals long before it affects the modules. We therefore use stainless fixings throughout, isolate dissimilar metals at every joint, mount power supplies in a ventilated and reachable position because they are the parts most likely to need changing, and specify a face material that can be rinsed with fresh water. Ultraviolet exposure is the second mechanism: on a south-facing elevation near the marina the sealing compounds and the gaskets age faster than the electronics, and they are what an annual inspection actually looks at.
When does a rolling LED poster remove the installation problem entirely?

This is the point at which the distance stops being a disadvantage. The LED poster is a portrait display on a wheeled foot - a 640 by 1920 millimetre picture area, a frame 201 centimetres high, 45 kilograms - and the customer sets it up personally. There is no scaffolding, no cherry picker, no fixing into a facade and no structural sign-off, which means that where a mounted wall in Šibenik implies a preparation day, an overnight stay and a two-day crew visit from 651 kilometres away, a poster is delivered and working in the same week. It arrives in a P1.5 or P2 GOB build for close reading in a hotel lobby at Amadria Park or a bank hall on Poljana, a P2.5 indoor build for the Dalmare concourse, or a P2.5 outdoor cabinet at 4,500 to 5,000 nits for a covered terrace. The controllers chain, so five units driven as one surface produce a 320 by 192 centimetre picture at 225 kilograms and roughly 4 kW peak - and you may start with one and grow into that.
How bright, and how dim, on this coast?
Full output at noon, a fraction of it at eleven at night
An outdoor screen facing the Adriatic sun runs at 4,500 to 5,500 nits, and that figure is set by midday in July rather than by anything else. The number that gets forgotten is the night one. Above a lane in the old town, or on a frontage with apartments opposite, the same screen at full output after dark is a nuisance and will end up switched off. Every installation is therefore commissioned with a daytime level, a reduced evening level and a night level or timed shutdown, and all three are written into the handover documents with their times. Indoors - a hotel conference room, a bank hall - the working range is 700 to 800 nits and the room's own lighting sets the final value.
Why are the finished dimensions not yours to choose freely?
320 millimetres across, 160 down, and no fractions of a tile
The building block is a single tile, always laid with its long side horizontal: 320 millimetres wide, 160 millimetres tall. A wall therefore grows in 32-centimetre steps horizontally and 16-centimetre steps vertically, and a specification written as 5 by 3 metres cannot be built. The nearest options are 4.80 by 2.88 metres or 5.12 by 3.04, and which one you take is normally decided by the opening in the elevation. Pixel pitch is chosen separately, from the sightline: P1.5 to P2.5 where people read from a couple of metres, P2.5 to P4 across a lobby or a forecourt, P4 to P8 for a wall met from a moving vehicle on the bridge approach.
