Below we treat the scrolling LED text board in Varaždin as a replacement project: reading the aperture you already have, deciding what of the old installation survives the change, the short survey that prevents a wasted return trip, transferring an existing message list to a new controller, and what happens at the end of the second board's life. A surprising share of the scrolling text boards we are asked about in Varaždin are replacements. The city acquired a generation of small text displays in the 2000s - above pharmacies and exchange offices on the Korzo, at the entrance to Trg kralja Tomislava, on gatehouses at the Vindija and Varteks sites, in the foyers of Sveučilište Sjever - and those units are now at the end of their lives. Replacing an existing board is a different job from installing a first one: the opening, the bracket, the cable route and often the audience's expectations are already fixed, and the interesting question is what can be inherited rather than what should be specified from scratch. That is the angle this page takes.

The board that is already on your wall

Replacement, not a first installation

When an old text board stops working, the reflex is to order the same size again. That is usually wrong, because the original was sized for whatever product was available at the time and its brightness, pitch and character height may never have been right. We start a replacement by asking what the existing board actually failed to do: was it unreadable in afternoon sun, too dim at night, too short for the sentences you wanted, or simply neglected because nobody could work the software. The answers change the specification more than the physical measurements do, and they cost nothing to gather - you have been living with the evidence for years.

The aperture decides the tile count

A replacement almost always has to sit inside an existing aperture: a glazed opening above a door, a recess in a fascia, a frame welded to a gatehouse canopy. Our tiles are 320 millimetres wide and 160 tall, so the usable area advances in those steps and rarely matches the old unit exactly. An opening of 1.55 by 0.35 metres, for example, accommodates four tiles across and two rows down - 1.28 by 0.32 metres - with a made-to-measure surround closing the difference. That surround is part of the job and is manufactured after the survey, not guessed from a photograph, because the difference between a tidy replacement and an obvious one is entirely in that margin.

What survives the change and what does not

Bracket, conduit and supply against controller and pitch

Steel usually survives. An existing bracket or frame, if it is sound and the new unit's weight and depth suit it, can often be reused after cleaning and repainting, and an existing conduit run with a serviceable earth saves a chase through somebody's shopfront. The electrical supply is frequently reusable too, since a text strip draws very little. What does not survive is the electronics: old controllers, proprietary software tied to a Windows version nobody still runs, and pitches that were coarse even when new. We are candid about this because customers occasionally hope to keep a controller in order to avoid relearning the software, and that hope is what produces an unmaintainable installation.

The survey that has to happen before the order

For a replacement, the survey is short and decisive. We measure the aperture in three places rather than one, since old openings are rarely square; check the bracket for corrosion at the fixings rather than in the middle; confirm the supply, the protective device and whether an isolator exists; and photograph the cable entry. We also check the Wi-Fi signal at the board position, because a text display can take its schedule over Wi-Fi and that removes the worst part of many retrofits - dragging a data cable across a finished interior. On a 220-kilometre run from Győr this survey is a morning, and it is what allows a single fitting visit afterwards.

Moving the message list to the new controller

Rewriting, not copying

Old boards accumulate content: opening hours that changed, a promotion from four winters ago, a phone number that has since been renumbered. Migration is therefore a good moment to rewrite rather than transfer. We ask for the current list as plain text, go through it with whoever will own it, and load only what is still true - typically a third of what was there. Croatian diacritics are worth a specific check at this stage, because a character set that renders c and c identically will silently damage half your words, and it is far cheaper to find that on a bench than on a wall above a pharmacy on the Korzo.

Disposal, spares and the second decade

What we take away, what we leave behind

We remove the old unit and take it away as electrical waste; it is not left in your yard. In its place you get reserve modules from the same batch as the new board, the controller settings written down, and two people trained rather than one, because the single most common cause of a neglected board is that the only person who knew the password has left. Warranty is one or two years by agreement. At 220 kilometres a genuine fault is a one-day visit from Győr, but most of what goes wrong on a text board in its first years is content, access or a tripped supply, and all three can be sorted out on the telephone.
