What follows is about programmable scrolling LED displays in a bilingual catchment: how to establish whether you really need a second language, what that language costs you in running time, whether the controller will render every character your two alphabets require, which language should lead, and who ends up maintaining two message lists instead of one. A scrolling text board is the only display we make where adding a second language costs no surface at all. It costs time instead, and in Čakovec that trade is worth working through properly rather than assuming. A shop on Trg Republike, a currency desk near the road down to the crossing at Goričan, a clinic waiting room or a service reception in the industrial zone may be read within the same minute by a regular from a Međimurje village and by somebody who has driven over from Nagykanizsa for the afternoon. A board that tries to serve both by simply doubling its content ends up serving neither, because every viewer waits twice as long for the line that concerns them. Getting this right is mostly a matter of arithmetic and honesty about who is actually standing there.

Does the board genuinely need two languages?

A question with an answer you can measure

The instinct in a border town is to say yes without checking. Before committing, spend two weeks noting which language your customers open the conversation in. Many businesses here discover that the proportion is heavily skewed by day of week and season rather than being even, and that changes the answer from a yes or no into a scheduling decision. There is also a category of content that needs no second version at all. Prices, opening hours in numerals, a queue number, a bay number and a symbol are already understood by everyone who can read digits. If your genuine message list turns out to consist mostly of numbers, you have a single-language board with a bilingual audience, which is the cheapest and best outcome available.

What does a second language cost in running time?

A twenty second loop becomes a forty second wait

This is the arithmetic that determines everything else. A board carrying four messages, each taking five seconds to scroll past, runs a twenty second loop. Somebody walking past has perhaps eight seconds of exposure, so they see part of the loop and, on average, a message and a half. Duplicate every item and the loop is forty seconds long while the pedestrian's eight seconds stay exactly as they were. The consequence is that a bilingual board must be shorter, not longer. Three messages in two languages will outperform six messages in two languages by a wide margin, because the reader's attention span did not double when your content did. If a business cannot cut the list to three, the honest conclusion is that the board is being asked to do a job that belongs to a poster or a website.

Will the display show every character correctly?

Diacritics on both sides of the border

Croatian needs č, ć, š, ž and đ. Hungarian adds ő and ű to the accented vowels, and those two are the ones that most often fail on cheap controllers, appearing as a plain o and u or as an empty box. On a scrolling board that error is not cosmetic, because a mis-set word in a short message is the whole message. This is testable before you order rather than after. Send us the exact strings you intend to display, including every accented word, and we will render them on the controller and photograph the result. It takes an afternoon and it removes a class of problem that is expensive to discover once the unit is on a wall. It is also worth checking how the software behaves when text is pasted from a document, which is where character encoding usually goes wrong.

Which language should come first?

A smaller question than it looks, with one real rule

In terms of readership the order matters less than the total loop length, because a passer-by catches whatever is on the board when they look up. The rule worth following is consistency: keep the same order every time so that regular readers learn where their language falls and can wait for it rather than reading everything. There is one exception with real consequences. Anything urgent or safety-related should not be alternated at all. A closure, a diversion, a changed entrance or a temporary hazard belongs on the board in both languages simultaneously, in shorter form if necessary, because a viewer who arrives during the wrong half of the cycle simply does not receive it.

How long may one line be before nobody finishes it?

Character height, board length and a walking reader

Allow roughly one centimetre of character height for every four metres of reading distance, with a little more where the reader is moving. A board read from six metres across a shop window wants characters of around two centimetres; a unit above a service reception read from twelve metres wants three or more. The board's length then comes from the number of characters your longest genuine message needs at that height, and it arrives in steps because the strip is assembled from the same 32 by 16 centimetre panels as our other products. Work the sequence in that order: distance, character height, longest message, panel count. Choosing the physical length first and then discovering what fits into it is how businesses end up abbreviating words, which in a second language reads as carelessness rather than economy.

Who keeps two message lists up to date?

Ownership, access and the spares in the drawer

Content reaches the controller over Wi-Fi, over a network cable or from a USB stick, and items can be given time windows so the balance between the two languages shifts by day of week without anybody being present. That capability is only useful if somebody actually maintains it. Two people should hold the access from handover, and both should be able to edit both languages, because a bilingual board where only one person can write the second version fails the first time that person is away. Alongside the credentials, keep the spare modules that came with the delivery.
