What follows treats a scrolling text board as the first step on a path rather than as a finished purchase. It covers writing the small number of sentences the display will actually repeat, sizing the strip so that it can later become part of something larger, choosing a controller family you will not have to abandon, handling a second language as a rotation item, loading the schedule with a fallback, and using the short distance sensibly.

A programmable text display is the smallest thing we make, and in Murska Sobota it is very often the first thing a business buys from us: a pharmacy on Slovenska ulica, a workshop in the Nemčavci zone, a club at Fazanerija. That makes the important question not what the board can do this year but what it does not prevent you from doing in three. A large proportion of the text displays we are asked to replace anywhere were perfectly serviceable; they were simply bought in a form that could not be extended, connected to anything or reused when the premises changed. In a town where we are only 189 kilometres away and can realistically come back, specifying for the second purchase rather than only for the first is a rational thing to do.
Write the three sentences the display will genuinely repeat
Content first, hardware second
Before any dimension is chosen, write out the messages that will actually appear over a year. Almost every working text board in a small business turns out to be showing between three and eight items in rotation: opening times, a telephone number, a current offer, a seasonal notice. If you cannot fill that list, the board will end up displaying one stale sentence and you would be better served by a printed sign. If the list is longer than a dozen items, you are describing a poster or a small video surface, not a text strip, and the budget should move accordingly.
Size the strip so it can become the top row of something bigger

A text display is built from the same landscape modules as a full surface, 32 centimetres wide by 16 tall. If you specify a width that is a sensible multiple, say 320 or 384 centimetres, the strip you buy now sits on the same grid as any larger picture surface you might add above or below it later, and the two can eventually be driven as one. Choosing an arbitrary width because it happened to fit a bracket closes that door permanently. It costs nothing to align to the grid at the outset; it costs the whole board to correct afterwards.

The part of the purchase that determines your future options is not the panel but the controller and the software habit that goes with it. Specify a controller that accepts content over Wi-Fi and over a UTP network cable, and that will also read a USB stick, so that none of the three routes is closed off. If a poster or a larger surface follows, keeping to the same family means the person who learned to schedule the text strip already knows how to schedule the new equipment. This is worth more over five years than a small difference in the price of the first board.
Add the second language as a rotation item, not as a second board

In a regional centre whose customers arrive from the bilingual villages around Lendava and Hodoš as well as from across the Hungarian border, some messages genuinely need to appear in more than one language. The efficient way is alternating items on one board rather than two displays or two lines at half the height. Each version needs enough dwell time to be read from start to finish by somebody walking past, which in practice means the rotation is slower than people expect. Allow vertical clearance for the accented characters as well: carons on č, š and ž and the Hungarian ő and ű sit above the capital height and will be clipped by a typeface set to fill the full depth.
Load the schedule over Wi-Fi and keep a stick in the drawer
Two routes in, so one failure is not a crisis
Day to day updating is done over Wi-Fi from a laptop or a phone, which requires no cabling to the display and no involvement from anybody else. Keep the USB route configured as well, because it works when the wireless does not and when the person who normally updates the board is unavailable. Write the procedure for both on a single sheet and leave it physically with the equipment, together with two sets of credentials so that the display is never dependent on one individual being at work.
Use the 189 kilometres for one good visit, then leave it alone
Commissioning properly beats servicing often
The short distance makes a proper commissioning visit affordable, and that visit is where the value is. Setting the brightness levels and their switching times, checking legibility from the position people actually read from, training two people, and recording everything on paper prevents most of what would otherwise become a service call. Beyond that, a dead area is nearly always a single module and a dark board nearly always the power supply, both replaceable with a screwdriver from the spares supplied with the goods. Warranty runs one or two years by construction, and travel is itemised separately when a visit is needed.
