Where deliveries and visitors use different entrances, that has to be legible from the road as well, because a lorry that takes the visitor entrance will reverse out of it and the neighbours will remember.

Work from the reading distance and the closing speed. A sign at a gate, read from thirty or forty metres by somebody already slowing, needs letters in the region of thirty centimetres. A sign on a hall gable intended to be picked up from the through road at a hundred and fifty metres and at speed needs letters several times that, and it needs to carry two or three words at most — a name, nothing else. The temptation with a large gable is to fill it, because the wall is there and the fabricator will happily quote for more. Resist it. A name in very large letters against a plain field is read; the same name with a strapline, a website and three product categories underneath is read by nobody at any distance. Everything that is not the name belongs on the gate sign, where the reader has stopped.

Individual illuminated letters cost the most to fabricate and the least to keep. Each character is a sealed unit with its own light source, so a failure is one letter rather than a dark sign, and there is no plastic face to yellow. Halo lighting suits an office frontage and needs a clean pale wall to work against — most industrial cladding is neither. The comparison worth making is not between these three but between a fixed sign and a fixed sign plus a small changeable display: if your gate has to publish delivery hours, a temporary entrance or a contractor induction notice, a programmable panel beneath the permanent name will save you a decade of taped-up paper.

The gable identifies the building from a distance; the gate directs, informs and confirms. Designed together they reinforce each other — the same typeface, the same colour, the same logo at two scales — and a visitor who spotted the gable at a hundred metres recognises the gate sign instantly. Designed separately by two suppliers a few years apart, they compete, and a driver who is already unsure becomes more so. In a multi-tenant setting such as the Zapolje zones or a shared logistics building, this extends to the estate signage as well. A monolith at the entrance listing the occupants only helps if the individual unit signs use the same names in the same form; a company that appears as one legal entity on the monolith and under a trading name on its own door has created the exact confusion the signage was bought to remove. Agree the naming before anything is fabricated.
