Walk the site and note every piece of information that somebody currently communicates by voice, by radio or by a sheet taped to a window. In a forwarding operation that list writes itself: bay allocation, call-forward order, the wait time at the weighbridge, whether a gate is closed. In a manufacturing hall it is output against target, the current order number, the count of days since the last incident, and the next planned stoppage. Those are the messages worth displaying, because they are short, factual and wrong within hours of being printed. Anything that stays true for a month belongs on a notice board and does not justify hardware. The test is simple: if you would have to reprint it this week, put it on a board; if you would not, do not.
Calculate the character height inside your own building
Measure the aisle before you look at a price list
Allow roughly 2.5 centimetres of character height for every three metres between the board and the furthest person expected to read it, and be generous outdoors and in bright halls. A goods-in board read from the far end of a loading area at twenty metres needs characters around seventeen centimetres tall; a canteen board read across ten metres needs about eight; a yard board read by a driver at forty metres needs well over thirty. Pace out the distance yourself before anyone quotes. This figure sets the board's physical size and therefore its cost, which is why it must come first. The failure pattern is always the same: a board is bought to a price, the intended message will not fit at a legible size, and the text is reduced until drivers stop looking at it. If the message is too long for the board you can afford, shorten the message or alternate two short frames — never shrink the characters.
Decide whether the message carries a state
When colour earns its cost and when it does not
A single-colour board in amber or white is the cheapest and the most legible at distance, and for bay numbers, times and counters it is entirely sufficient. Spend the difference on a physically larger board and you will get more benefit than colour would have given you. Colour becomes worth paying for when the message conveys a condition as well as a value. Green for a bay ready and red for a bay held; green for a gate open and red for a gate closed; a safety counter that turns red when it resets. A driver reads that distinction faster than any word, and — this matters in a yard where the drivers come from half a dozen countries — it needs no translation at all. Full colour is only justified where an image or a logo has to appear, and at that point the honest comparison is against a small display rather than a large text board.
Feed the board from the systems you already run

The controller can be updated over WiFi, over a wired network connection, or from a memory stick. In a steel-framed hall the wired route is usually the more dependable, and where a data point already exists near the position it costs almost nothing to use it; wireless makes sense in an office or where no cabling exists; a stick suits an isolated position in a yard with no coverage at all. But the connection method is the small question. The large one is whether the content comes from a person or from a system. A board that somebody has to type into every morning is accurate for about three weeks and then quietly becomes wrong. A board fed from the warehouse management system, the production counter or a shared calendar stays right without anybody remembering to do anything. Where an automatic feed is not practical, schedule the recurring content — shift patterns, canteen days, the standard closing notice — so that daily intervention is the exception. Write for a driver population that is not Slovene
Numbers, colours and symbols before words
A yard in the Zapolje zones on an ordinary Tuesday holds cabs registered across half of Europe, and the A1 delivers more of them every hour. Anything you write in words will be missed by a proportion of the people who need it, so the design principle is to carry as much of the message as possible in things that need no translation: a bay number as a large numeral, a registration matched against it, a colour for the state, an arrow for the direction. Where words are unavoidable, keep to a very small vocabulary and rotate it through the two or three languages that dominate your traffic rather than every language somebody proposes — a longer rotation means a driver looks up and sees a version they cannot read. Ask a driver to read the finished board from the cab before you sign it off. That five-minute check catches more problems than any amount of review at a desk, particularly abbreviations that seemed self-evident to whoever wrote them.
Set the installation up so distance never becomes a problem
