We manufacture and fit illuminated signs - built-up letters, halo-lit lettering, fascia boxes and shopfront portals - and deliver them to Kočevje from our works in Győr, 467 kilometres away. Because that distance makes a return visit expensive, we settle the wording, the letter height and the fixing method before anything is cut. This page sets out how we do that for a small centre with a very dark surround.
Illuminated signage in Kočevje — manufacturing, installation, quote
Illuminated signage in Kočevje has to answer a condition most towns do not impose: darkness. The built-up area is small, it is ringed by forest, and beyond Trg zbora odposlancev and Ljubljanska cesta the ambient light drops away quickly. A sign calibrated for a city street is not impressive here, it is glaring - and it throws light towards a landscape that people value precisely because it is dark. The right specification in Kočevje is usually a dimmer, smaller, better-shielded sign than the same business would install in Ljubljana, and it will read better for it.
How far away will the sign be read from?
Distance first, height second
The measurement that sets everything is the distance from the sign to the point where a person first needs to read it. In the compact centre around the parish church of St Bartholomew that is often fifteen or twenty metres on foot, which calls for capital letters of fifteen to twenty centimetres - modest, and correct. On the approach along Ljubljanska cesta, where the reader is driving, the same name needs to be half as tall again. We walk the approach before agreeing a height, because a street tree or a parked vehicle can remove a sign for exactly the seconds that mattered. Where that happens we move the sign rather than enlarge it; a bigger sign in the wrong place is still in the wrong place.
How bright should a sign be where the surroundings are dark?
Setting the night level on site
Brightness is not a fixed property of a sign, it is a schedule. We build every unit with a dimming curve and we set it after dark at the actual position, because the correct evening level in a centre surrounded by woodland is markedly lower than the level that looks right at two in the afternoon. The second half of the question is where the light goes rather than how much there is. A hood on the top edge of a fascia box, and a rear-shielded halo letter, keep light off the upper windows and out of the tree line. Both are trivial to build in and effectively impossible to add neatly later, so they belong in the quotation.
Does an industrial site need a sign or a sign system?
Gate totem, building numbers and wayfinding
On a works site the single illuminated name over the office door is rarely the useful part. What a delivery driver arriving at Tomšičeva cesta needs is a lit totem at the gate that can be read from the carriageway, then building identifiers that work at walking pace, then a reception marker. That is three different sizes of the same family, and specified together they cost less than they do bought one at a time over five years. So for a site enquiry we ask for a plan rather than a photograph of one elevation. The gate unit is usually the only piece that has to be bright; everything inside the fence can be smaller, quieter and cheaper because the reader has already slowed down.
Does the sign have to be illuminated at all?
Where a lit sign is money you need not spend
Not every position earns illumination. A gable facing a car park that is empty after five in the afternoon, or a unit whose customers all arrive in daylight, is served perfectly well by a painted or applied sign at half the price and with no electrical connection to maintain. We would rather point that out than take the larger order. Where illumination does earn its cost is a long dark evening with a genuine trading reason behind it - a pharmacy, a filling station, a restaurant, a site gate used by night shifts. That is a short list, and it is worth checking whether you are on it before the specification is written.
Who deals with the permissions, and what do we supply?
Rules exist; we provide the annexes
There are requirements governing what may be fixed to a facade and what may be displayed towards a public road, and in a centre with historic fabric around the square there may be further conditions on the building itself. We do not tell customers that consent is a formality, because it is not ours to promise. What we do supply is the technical part of the file: dimensioned drawings, the fixing detail with loads, the electrical data and the luminance schedule. Your designer or the building owner submits; we answer the technical questions that come back. You get one or two years of cover, and spare parts arrive in the same delivery as the sign.
How is the job sequenced across 467 kilometres?
Survey, manufacture, one installation visit
We survey, build in Győr, and install in a single visit, which means every decision has to be closed before the vehicle is loaded. A change discovered on site is not a small change at this distance, so we send a final drawing for signature and we wait for it. The survey trip and the installation are quoted as their own lines with the kilometres shown, separate from the price of the sign itself. Where a customer can arrange for a local electrician to bring a supply to the position beforehand, the installation visit shortens and that line gets smaller - we will always tell you when that is worth doing.
