We build and install illuminated signs - fabricated channel letters, halo-lit lettering, sealed lightboxes and pylon signs - and we do it for a valley where the wind decides how a sign is fixed and how often it needs looking at. Our workshop is 496 kilometres away in Győr, so signs leave here complete and tested, and the fitting is a single planned visit. Below: the sign types, the fixing question, legibility from a moving vehicle, and what we do and do not do about permits.

Illuminated signage in Ajdovščina — manufacturing, installation, quote

Illuminated signage in Ajdovščina answers to two very different frontages. On the industrial side, along Tovarniška cesta and Goriška cesta, the sign is a gate marker and a company identity read from a road at speed, mounted on cladding or a free-standing pylon. In the centre, around Lavričev trg, the situation is archaeological: the recent reconstruction of the square exposed the Roman principium of Castra, and sections of the fort wall and its towers still stand in the street pattern. The same sign type cannot serve both, and it is worth knowing which one you are dealing with before you commission a drawing.

Sign types for a factory gate and for a town square

Pylon, fascia and bracket, and what each is really for

A free-standing pylon at a works entrance does a job no wall-mounted sign can: it is visible before the driver reaches the gate, it can be read from both directions, and it carries a name plus a direction without competing with the building. On a cladding elevation, fabricated letters mounted on stand-offs give a clean result and leave the panel joints undisturbed, which matters because a lightbox screwed across a cladding rib is a water ingress problem waiting to happen. In the town centre the appropriate object is smaller and often projects rather than covers - a bracket sign on a modest arm, lit gently or lit by reflection. Near the exposed Roman fabric the correct answer sometimes is that the wall takes nothing at all and the identification goes in the window instead. We would rather say that at enquiry stage than draw something that will be refused.

Fixings, wind exposure and the maintenance interval

Why a sign here is inspected on a schedule

Every projecting sign in this valley is a lever. Gust loading works cyclically on the bracket, the bolts and the wall behind them, and a fixing that would last untouched for twenty years elsewhere needs a defined inspection here. We specify stainless fixings into a checked substrate, we keep projections short, and we hand over an inspection interval in writing with the sign. The design also avoids surfaces that trap air. A closed rectangular box on a long arm is the worst geometry available; a set of separated letters on a frame lets the air through and reduces what the anchors have to carry. This is one of the places where the visually better solution is also the structurally better one, which does not happen often enough to waste.

Luminance, colour and legibility at road speed

A driver on the approach has about two seconds

A sign read from a moving vehicle on Goriška cesta gets roughly two seconds of attention, which is one short name or one number - not a strapline, not a telephone number, not a list of services. The single most effective change we make to a customer's draft is deleting most of the words. Contrast does the rest: light characters on a dark field remain readable when the sun is behind the sign, which in a valley running east to west happens twice a day. Night-time output is a separate setting from daytime output, and both are set at commissioning. A sign visible from a road should be bright enough to be seen and no brighter, and the dimming schedule is part of the specification rather than an accessory. We state the values we set so that they can be checked later.

The archaeological square and what may be attached to it

Presentation fields, standing wall, and the argument for a free-standing solution

The reconstruction of Lavričev trg left the remains of the Roman headquarters building presented in open fields below the level of the square, and stretches of the Castra wall with its towers survive around the old core. Anything fixed near that fabric is a sensitive question and is treated as one, and the surrounding street surface is not simply something to be drilled into. This pushes businesses in the centre towards solutions that touch nothing: lettering applied inside the glazing, a small hanging sign on an existing bracket position, or a free-standing unit on the premises' own ground. It is a narrower palette than an out-of-town site enjoys, but the results tend to look better and they avoid a conversation nobody wants to have with the heritage authority.

Documents for the permit file

What we prepare, and the sentence we will not write

Signs on buildings and signs visible from public roads are subject to requirements, and in this municipality the central area is assessed with the archaeology in mind. We are not consultants in that procedure, we do not submit on your behalf, and we will not tell you what the outcome will be - no supplier can know that, and any promise to the contrary should end the conversation. Our contribution is documentary and precise: a scaled elevation showing the sign in position, construction details, the fixing arrangement with the loads it imposes, mass, connected load in watts, and the luminance settings for day and night. That package is prepared before manufacture so that a change requested during the procedure can still be made cheaply.

Service across 496 kilometres, cover period and spares

Designed so a local electrician can finish the job

At this range the sensible service model is to design for local repair. Power supplies sit in reachable positions behind an access panel, the internal wiring is labelled, a laminated diagram travels inside the housing, and a small spares kit is left on site at commissioning. Nine faults out of ten are then a part swap that any competent local electrician can carry out the same week. The guarantee runs for one or two years, fixed in the order confirmation rather than assumed, and a defect inside that period is put right at our cost including the journey. Anything outside it is quoted with the travel element shown separately, which at the far end of our range is the only presentation that lets you judge the offer fairly.
