We design, build and fit illuminated signs: channel letters, lightboxes, halo-lit lettering and small LED panels used as a sign rather than as a screen. Radovljica is 432 kilometres from our workshop, so a sign is manufactured complete, tested before it leaves, and fitted in a single visit with everything needed already on the van. The sections below run through the choice of sign type, the brightness question at night, and the paperwork we do and do not handle.
Illuminated signage in Radovljica — manufacturing, installation, quote
For illuminated signage the interesting line in Radovljica runs between the protected core and everything outside it. Within the old town the elevations belong to a listed ensemble and the appropriate sign is small, restrained and often not illuminated at all. A few hundred metres away, on the trading stretch of Kranjska cesta, on Gorenjska cesta and on the approach road towards Lesce, the same business can legitimately use a lit fascia that is visible from a moving car. The craft is knowing which of the two situations you are actually in before you commission anything.
What kind of sign actually belongs on a protected frontage?
Restraint reads better than output
On a historic elevation the successful signs are small, mounted on brackets rather than covering the stonework, and often lit indirectly or not at all. Gilt or painted lettering on a hanging bracket has served the houses along Linhartov trg for centuries and still outperforms a plastic box, because it belongs to the building and the eye accepts it. A backlit fascia across the same shopfront reads as damage. This is not us talking a customer out of a purchase. It is the difference between a sign that is approved and stays up for fifteen years and one that generates a complaint in its first month. Radovljica Manor at the head of the square, with the Museum of Apiculture inside it, is signed almost invisibly and loses nothing by it. Where a business in a listed building genuinely needs illuminated presence, we usually put it behind the glass instead of on the wall, where the ensemble is not affected.
Channel letters, lightbox or a small panel - which suits your shopfront?
Three constructions, three different maintenance stories
Individually built channel letters give the cleanest result on a modern fascia: each character is its own sealed housing, the wall between the letters stays dark, and one failed letter is replaced without touching the others. A lightbox is cheaper per square metre and easier to reface when a brand changes, but it is a single lit rectangle and it looks like one. A small LED panel is the only one of the three that can change what it says, which matters for a pharmacy rota or a fuel price but is wasted on a fixed name. On Kranjska cesta, on the Gorenjska cesta frontages and out along the Lesce road, where the chocolate works at Gorenjka has been operating since 1922, all three are defensible; the choice usually comes down to how often the content will change and how the frontage is lit at night. We quote the maintenance path with the sign, because the cheapest construction to buy is rarely the cheapest to keep lit.
How bright should a sign be at night on a residential street?
The neighbours are the constraint, not the diode
Signage brightness is one of the few places where more is straightforwardly worse. A fascia that competes with a motorway gantry, fitted above a shop with flats over it, generates complaints, and the fix is always a dimmer rather than a smaller sign. We fit signs with a scheduled output curve: full during trading hours, stepped down after closing, and off in the small hours if the operator wants it off. Getting this right at the design stage is cheap. Retrofitting a control to a sealed lightbox that is already on the wall means taking it down again, and at this distance that is a journey nobody wanted to pay for twice.
What does a sign have to survive on this terrace?
Winter, condensation and the way water finds a seam
Radovljica sits high enough in the Gorenjska basin for real winters, and the failure mode we see most often is not cold but the daily freeze and thaw working at a poor seal. Water gets into a badly gasketed lightbox, freezes overnight, and the seam opens a little further every day until the tray is full and the drivers are dead. Every exterior housing we build is sealed to IP65 and drained deliberately, so that anything that does get in leaves again. The second detail is the fixing. Snow sliding from a pitched roof onto a projecting bracket sign is a genuine load, and it is worth checking what is above a sign before deciding how far it projects. We look at the roofline on the survey, not only the wall.
Who deals with the municipality, and what do we hand over?
Documents from us, the application from you
There are requirements for the appearance and placement of signs, and they are applied more tightly here than in a retail park because much of the town is a conservation area. We do not lodge applications, we do not have a relationship with the office, and we will not tell you what the answer is going to be - anyone who promises that outcome is guessing with your money. What comes from us is the annex: scaled drawings of the sign and its position on the elevation, the fixing detail and the loads it puts into the wall, the mass, the connected load and the night-time luminance setting. That is the package an architect or the owner submits, and it is prepared before manufacture so nothing has to be redrawn afterwards.
What does 432 kilometres mean for keeping a sign lit?
Spares in the box beats a service van on the motorway
We do not pretend that a technician can be outside your door the same afternoon. Instead we design so that the common failures are handled locally: drivers and modules in accessible positions, a labelled wiring diagram fixed inside the housing, and a small set of spare parts left with the sign when it is commissioned. A local electrician can then change a driver without waiting for us. The guarantee period is agreed in writing at order stage - one year or two, depending on the specification you choose - and a genuine warranty failure is our cost including the journey. Work outside the guarantee is quoted with the travel shown as its own line, so you always know which part of the invoice is the sign and which part is the road.
