This page is about illuminated signage for premises in Domžale, and it starts from the ribbon rather than from a catalogue of constructions. We cover how to establish what is already there, how depth and silhouette buy you separation that brightness cannot, what a tenant should insist on in the fixing detail, and what we supply towards a submission. The finished signs are made at our works and fitted on site, 396 kilometres away, which is why the survey is worth doing properly the first time.

Illuminated signage in Domžale — manufacturing, installation, quote

Slovenia 396 km from our plant in Győr

Look along Ljubljanska cesta after dark and the problem announces itself. The commercial frontage of Domžale is a long, uninterrupted ribbon of small units running from the Vir turning down past Češminov park, each with a sign that was designed on its own and none of which was designed with reference to its neighbours. The result is visual noise of a very particular kind: everything is lit, everything is roughly the same size, and almost everything is at the same distance from the pavement. An illuminated sign here does not have to compete with darkness. It has to separate itself from twenty other lit objects within a hundred metres, which is a completely different design brief.

A night photograph of your neighbours

The survey that happens before any drawing

The first useful piece of work costs nothing. Stand on the opposite pavement after dark, at the distance a customer would actually be, and photograph the whole run of frontage including four or five units either side of yours. The stretch of Ljubljanska cesta either side of Češminov park is typical of what comes back. What the photograph shows is usually the same three or four colours, the same flat mounting plane and the same output level repeated along the street. Everything we propose afterwards is aimed at breaking one of those three uniformities. Without the photograph the conversation drifts towards making your sign larger, which in a ribbon like this one buys almost nothing.

Silhouette and mounting depth

Separation in the third dimension

Where every sign in a row lies flat against its fascia, the cheapest way to stand apart is to leave the plane. A projecting sign set perpendicular to the frontage is visible from along the pavement rather than only from opposite it, and it appears in the field of view several seconds earlier for anybody walking or driving past. Built up letters standing proud of the fascia, lit from behind so that a halo falls onto the wall, achieve something similar without any projection at all. Both cost more than a flat box, and both are usually worth it precisely because the neighbours have chosen the flat box.

Colour and contrast decided against the street

The gap in the palette nobody has taken

In most Slovenian retail ribbons the lit palette is dominated by warm white, red and blue. Once you have the night photograph, the unclaimed part of the spectrum is generally obvious, and a sign that occupies it is recognised at a distance before it is read. Contrast matters more than saturation: pale lettering on a dark unlit ground reads at speed, whereas a fully lit face with dark letters cut into it tends to merge with the general glow. This is a decision to take before the artwork is finalised, not after the sign is built.

Brightness set relative to what is already there

Two levels, agreed at commissioning

There is no absolute correct output for a shopfront. There is only a level that reads clearly against the neighbouring signs without turning your unit into the brightest object on the street, which is the fastest way to attract a complaint from the flats above. We set a daytime level and an evening level at commissioning, with the switching times written into the handover sheet so that they can be checked and, if a resident asks, adjusted and documented. Anything mounted on the elevation is also dimmed further after the shops close.

The tenant question and the fixings

What can be taken down and made good

Much of this corridor, and a good deal of the commercial stock out towards Količevo, is let rather than owned, and a sign is only worth commissioning if you can take it with you or remove it cleanly. That is a specification item, not an afterthought: fixing into the substrate through a mounting rail rather than through the sign body, cable entry through an existing penetration where one exists, and a documented method for making good the fascia on removal. Ask for that in writing at the quotation stage. It also makes the landlord conversation considerably shorter.

Two signatures, and neither of them is ours

The order in which consent is collected

Two signatures matter on a project like this and neither of them is ours. The first belongs to whoever owns the wall. Much of this corridor is let, so in practice that is the landlord or the managing agent, and what you want from them is written agreement to a specific drawing rather than to the idea of a sign in general. It costs nothing, it takes a fortnight if you ask early, and it is the piece of paper that settles a dispute two years later when the unit changes hands. The second sits with the municipality, which applies its own local provisions on what may hang from a frontage and how brightly it may be lit. Running that process is your job or your architect's. From us you get the manufacturer's annexes it has to be built on: a scale elevation with every dimension marked, a section through the fixing that names what the anchor goes into, the height above the pavement, the connected load and the measured output at each of the two settings. We will redraw as many times as the discussion needs. We will not lodge the file, stand in for you at a counter, or tell you how it will be decided, because none of those is ours to give.
