A programmable text board displays short lines of changing information: today's menu, tonight's opening hours, a ferry or excursion departure, a price. It is inexpensive, easy to run and easy to waste. Below is the order in which the decisions should be taken, with the seasonal cycle and the coastal environment treated as the design constraints they actually are rather than as afterthoughts.

Walk the Riva or the Giardini on an evening in August and you are among people who are not going anywhere in particular. They are strolling, deciding where to eat, reading whatever is put in front of them because they have the time. That is the single best condition a scrolling text board can be given, and it exists in Pula for roughly five months of the year. For the other seven the same pavement carries residents on errands who stopped reading that board in October. A text display here therefore has two lives, and buying one without deciding how it will behave in each of them is the most common and most expensive mistake made with the cheapest product we sell.
Decide whether the board works five months or twelve
The answer changes the specification and the price
A board that will only be used in season can be smaller, simpler and mounted where it is easy to reach, and it can be taken down and stored through the winter, which more than doubles its life in a salt atmosphere. A board that must work all year needs a permanent position, a proper enclosure and a schedule that somebody maintains in January. Both are legitimate; the trouble comes from buying the second and using it like the first, which is how a display ends up showing an expired summer offer to an empty street in November.
Site it where the crowd slows down
Seconds of attention, not metres of visibility
The value of a position is measured in how long a passer-by has, not in how many people go past. A board beside a doorway on the Giardini, at the point where people stop to look at a menu, or on the approach to a beach at Stoja where the pace is slow, is worth several times one on a road where nobody can stop. Stand at the proposed spot at the hour that matters and count the seconds a person spends within reading range. If the answer is under three, either move the board or reduce the message to four words.

Salt, ultraviolet and the fixings behind the box
Outdoors the unit is sealed to IP65, but on the coast the specification has to go further than the rating. Stainless fixings, isolation between dissimilar metals, glanded cable entries, a drain at the lowest point of the housing and a face material that will not craze under Adriatic ultraviolet within two summers: these are the details that decide whether the board is still presentable at its fifth season. Behind glass, indoors, none of this applies and the board can be much simpler, which is why a window-mounted unit is our first suggestion wherever the shopfront allows it.
Write the summer list and the winter list separately
Two schedules, prepared once, switched by date
Prepare two complete message sets rather than editing one continuously. The summer set carries what a visitor needs — opening hours, today's offer, a departure time, a short line in a second language. The winter set is shorter, calmer and aimed at people who live here, and it may run at a lower brightness and for fewer hours. Both are loaded with validity dates so the changeover happens on the day it should, without depending on somebody remembering. Content reaches the board over Wi-Fi, over the local network or from a USB stick, and the whole seasonal switch takes one sitting in May.
Size the characters from the width of the street
Reading distance, module steps and one line rather than two
Allow three to four metres of comfortable reading for every centimetre of character height. In a narrow street in the centre, where the reader is five or six metres away, letters of two centimetres suffice and a compact board is entirely adequate. On a wider frontage read from twenty metres, letters climb to six or eight centimetres and the board grows accordingly, in steps of 16 centimetres in height and 32 in width because those are the module dimensions. Given a choice between two cramped lines and one generous one, take the single line; it is read, and the other is not.
Clean it twice a year and keep a spare module in the drawer
Maintenance at 613 kilometres from the works
Salt film on the face is the main enemy of legibility long before anything electrical fails, and two washes a year with clean water restores most of the apparent brightness a coastal board loses. The consignment includes spare modules, and swapping one is a task for whoever maintains the premises, not for a specialist. This matters here more than anywhere: Pula is 613 kilometres from Győr, so a physical service visit is a two-day operation with travel and accommodation itemised, whereas a schedule problem or a lost network address can usually be resolved remotely the same morning it is reported. Warranty is one or two years by specification.
