Almost every commercial frontage in Solin is read from a vehicle. The through-road that links the town with Split and with the coastal route carries a great deal of traffic that is not stopping, and the businesses along it, from workshops and showrooms to supermarkets and cafés, are identified at thirty or fifty kilometres an hour rather than at walking pace. That single fact makes signage here a different exercise from signage in a pedestrian centre. Add two more local conditions and the specification is nearly written: the archaeological areas around Salona bring restrictions to some positions and neighbours to others, and salt-laden air along the low ground beside the Jadro, and out towards Vranjic, works quietly on fixings and enclosures for the whole life of the sign.

Establish which road your sign is read from

The approach direction, not the address

Stand where your customers come from and look back at the building. On the through-route most drivers approach from one direction far more often than the other, whether that is from the Split side or down from the Sveti Kajo end, and the sign that works is the one visible in that approach cone rather than the one squarely on the facade. A sign flat against a wall parallel to the road is read for about a second; the same sign projecting from the wall is read for five. We do this walk, or rather this drive, as part of the survey and photograph the frontage from the approach at the actual speed. It sounds elementary and it changes the design more often than any other single input, because owners naturally think about their building from the pavement in front of it.

Size the lettering for traffic speed, not for a pavement

Reading distance, viewing angle and the seconds available

A driver at fifty kilometres an hour covers about fourteen metres a second. If the sign becomes visible eighty metres out and is passed at thirty, that is roughly three and a half seconds of exposure, during which a person is also driving. Three or four words is the realistic ceiling. Character height follows from the reading distance rather than from the size of the building: allow roughly one centimetre per four metres, and add margin because the reader is moving. A sign intended to be legible from sixty metres therefore wants characters around fifteen centimetres tall, and once that number is fixed the width of the sign is arithmetic rather than preference. Most disappointing roadside signs are the right size for the wall and the wrong size for the road.

Choose materials that survive coastal air

Stainless fasteners, drained enclosures and separated metals

Salt does not attack the illuminated face of a sign; it attacks everything behind it. We specify stainless fasteners throughout, powder-coated or marine-grade aluminium for the carcass, drained enclosures so that condensate leaves rather than sits, and an isolating layer where dissimilar metals meet at the bracket. Cable entry is the detail that decides the outcome. Every penetration is sleeved and drilled to fall outwards, and glands are specified rather than improvised, because moisture that enters a sign through its own supply cable is the single most common failure we are asked to repair on this coast. A sign built this way needs a fresh water rinse two or three times a year and very little else.

Parts of Solin sit close to protected archaeological areas, and requirements for signage vary with the position, the building and the surroundings. We do not promise outcomes, we do not apply on your behalf, and we would treat any supplier who did so with caution. What we supply is the documentation the process expects: dimensioned drawings, a photomontage against your actual frontage by day and after dark, construction and fixing details, electrical data and luminance figures. The sequence that saves time is to establish what is permitted first and then design within it. Reworking a sign the owner has already approved internally is the most demoralising part of this business, and it is nearly always avoidable.

Full output while you trade, less afterwards

A roadside sign bright enough to read at fifty kilometres an hour in daylight is much brighter than a residential street needs at midnight, and in a town where housing sits immediately behind the commercial frontages that becomes a neighbour's problem quickly. The answer is a timed schedule programmed into the driver: full output during trading hours, a reduced level in the evening, and a further reduction or a switch-off overnight. Specify it with the sign. Adding it later means a return visit, and from 717 kilometres a return visit for a setting is the most avoidable expense in this whole document. We set the values at commissioning and record them in the handover pack so they can be adjusted without dismantling anything.

What you do locally, and what we come for

Assume from the start that routine work is done by somebody in the Split area rather than by us. To make that possible we hand over the driver specifications, the access method, the fixing drawing and the electrical data, so that a competent local electrician can replace a driver or reseal a gland without a phone call to Hungary. The schedule itself is short. Rinse two or three times a year, inspect the fixings and the glands annually, and expect the driver rather than the diodes to be the component that eventually needs changing. Warranty is one or two years by construction. Where a fault is genuinely ours we travel, and the 717 kilometres are shown on that invoice as their own line, which is precisely why we prefer that most faults never need us.
