Illuminated signage is the product we supply into the far south with the least difficulty, because it ships as an assembly and is fitted by a local contractor. This page covers what we build, how the delta climate should change your specification, what the permit file contains, and how the fitting is organised when our crew is 820 kilometres away and yours is not.
Illuminated signage in Metković — manufacturing, installation, quote
Croatia · 820 km from our plant in Győr
Trade in Metkovic is shaped by two flows of people that have nothing to do with each other. One is local and daily: residents of the town and of the villages across the delta, plus commuters from Gabela Polje and Doljani who cross the border every morning to work and shop here. The other is passing: traffic on the main road towards Ploce and the coast, and pilgrims and visitors heading for Medjugorje some thirty-five kilometres away. A shopfront on Stjepana Radica is speaking to the first group; a sign on the through road is speaking to the second, at speed, once, from a car. Those need different signs, and the mistake we see most often is one sign trying to do both jobs.
Which sign for which audience?
The shopfront, the roadside and the industrial gate
For a shopfront on a town street, individual letters at a legible height beat a large lit box every time; they identify the business without turning the frontage into a lantern, and they cost less to run. For a position on a through road read from a moving vehicle, the priority reverses: fewer words, far larger characters, high contrast, and no detail that requires a second look. For a gate at a packing station or a cold store on the edge of town, the sign is a wayfinding instrument and should say which entrance and for whom, not what the company's values are. A fourth case is specific to this area: seasonal trade. A fruit stand or a plantation shop that only opens for part of the year is better served by a lit panel that can be switched off and left, or by a mobile unit brought out for the season, than by a permanent installation that spends half its life dark and weathering.
How does delta humidity change the specification?
Sealing, drainage and material choice
Standing water is the enemy of illuminated signage, and in a humid delta with heavy autumn rainfall it finds its way into anything that was designed for a drier place. We build the housings for this region with drainage at the lowest point rather than a sealed box that traps condensation, with gasketed cable entries, and with stainless fixings rather than plated steel, because salt-bearing air will find plated steel within a couple of seasons. Material choice matters for a second reason. The ultraviolet load here is much higher than inland, and a translucent face made from an economy grade acrylic will yellow visibly in three or four summers. Specifying the correct grade adds a modest amount at manufacture and removes the need to refit a discoloured face while the sign is still otherwise sound.
Who fits the sign if you are not coming?
A local contractor, our drawings, our support
This is the normal arrangement for Metkovic and it works well. The sign leaves our workshop as a complete assembly with the fixing pattern set, the cable route determined and the connection point specified, together with a fitting drawing that a local electrician or signfitter can work from. The client engages that contractor; we are available by call during the fitting and check the finished installation from photographs. The division of responsibility is stated in the offer so nobody is uncertain later: we are responsible for the sign and its behaviour, the fitter is responsible for the fixing into the building and for the supply. Where the facade is of uncertain construction we ask for photographs and, if necessary, for the fitter to open a small inspection before the fixings are finalised.
What goes into the permit file?
Our documents, the town's decision
Signage in Metkovic is subject to local rules, and near the riverfront and in the older streets those rules are applied more carefully. We do not predict outcomes and we do not promise approval - that is not something a manufacturer can honestly offer. We do prepare the technical annexes: an elevation drawing showing the sign in its position with dimensions, the fixing detail with the loads transferred to the structure, the electrical connected load and the protection rating of the enclosure, the luminance and the evening dimming schedule, and a photomontage on the real facade. If the property is leased, the owner's written consent is usually required as well; that is between you and the landlord, but it is worth obtaining before the application rather than after a query arrives.
What does a sign cost to run, and what fails first?
Consumption, dimming and predictable failures
Running cost is small and mostly determined by how long the sign stays at full output. A timed profile that steps the brightness down after the evening trade and again overnight typically removes a large share of the annual consumption while making no difference at all to how the sign is perceived when it matters. Failures follow a pattern. Power supplies fail first, seals fail if water has been allowed to collect anywhere, and light modules fail last and individually. Our constructions allow the driver to be reached from the front so that a repair does not need the sign to come down. Replacement modules and a spare driver are supplied with the sign, which at this distance is not a courtesy but the mechanism by which the sign gets repaired at all. Warranty runs for one year, or two on the higher specification, and is set out on the offer.
When should you buy from a coastal firm instead?
The projects where proximity wins
If your project involves a large structure requiring an access platform, groundwork for a freestanding totem, or repeated adjustment during a fit-out, a supplier in Split or Dubrovnik is better placed than we are and we will say so without being asked. Proximity is a real technical advantage on those jobs, not merely a commercial one. Where we compete well is on manufacture: a sign built to a specification, made once, shipped, fitted locally, and then left to work for years with spares already on your premises. If your project is that shape, distance costs you very little. If it is the other shape, distance costs you more than the sign is worth, and the useful thing we can do is tell you which of the two you have.
