An outdoor display is built weather-rated and far brighter, and it always gets a back panel. An indoor one allows a finer pixel pitch because people stand closer to it — and indoors the back panel is only an option.

A full-colour display reproduces photos, video and logos. A single-colour one shows text and simple graphics only, but it costs less and draws very little power.

The content decides how fine a pixel pitch you need: large lettering tolerates a much coarser pitch than a product photograph. Video and a live picture are as detail-hungry as a photograph.

This is what we base the pixel pitch recommendation on. Rule of thumb: the pixel pitch in millimetres is roughly the distance in metres from which the picture already looks smooth — two to three times that for detail-rich content. Buying a pitch finer than you need is wasted money; too coarse a pitch cannot be fixed afterwards.

One module measures 32 × 16 cm, so the width of the wall has to be a multiple of 32 cm and its height a multiple of 16 cm. This is not an aesthetic preference: half a module cannot be fitted.

You can give the size in modules as well: the two fields are linked, and whichever one you type into, the other follows immediately. The + and − buttons on the module field step one module at a time, so every step gives a size that can actually be built.

Facade fixing loads the wall itself, while a pole structure also has to carry wind load and may need structural sign-off. The two do not use the same amount of material.

On a corrugated, stepped or insulated facade a levelling sub-frame is needed, otherwise the display surface breaks up and the waves show in the picture. We measure this during the survey and price it on its own line.

This tells us whether a ladder is enough for the installation, or whether scaffolding or a platform lift is required.

Optional, but it helps a great deal: it tells us whether the manufacturing lead time fits, and whether we have a fitting crew free that week.

The wide 25 mm frame can be painted, which makes it the right choice where the display has to match the colour of the facade. The narrow 5 mm frame all but disappears beside the picture and is considerably more rigid — on a large surface that matters more.

The back panel closes off the rear of the display against rain, dust, insects and birds. Mounted on an indoor wall it is unnecessary; on a free-standing display, or one that is visible from behind, it is what gives you a finished, closed rear face.

It measures ambient light and matches the brightness of the display to it. That buys you two things. At night it does not dazzle — in many places that is a local requirement, and it is what heads off complaints from neighbours. During the day it does not shine harder than it has to: over a full day of outdoor operation this saves roughly a third to a half of the power draw, and the LEDs last longer too.

You change the content from a browser, from anywhere, and you can run several displays from one interface with scheduling. Without it the controller has to be fed over the local network or from a USB stick, so somebody has to walk up to the display for every change.

A longer warranty does not appear as a separate line, it appears in the whole price: with a two-year warranty we price at a higher multiplier. That is why the surcharge on the options also depends on which one you pick.
