Light behaves differently inside Zadar's old town than it does anywhere on the mainland ring. The streets between the Roman Forum and Kalelarga are narrow, paved and walled in pale limestone that reflects everything, so the ambient level after dark is low and the surfaces around a sign are bright rather than dark. A modest illuminated fascia there is visible from one end of the street to the other, and an aggressive one is simply unpleasant. Outside the walls the opposite applies: on the approach roads and around Supernova Zadar the sign competes with vehicle headlights, forecourt lighting and distance, and it needs area and contrast to register at all. Between those two worlds lies most of the trade in this city, and the specification changes completely as you cross from one to the other.

What is permissible on a facade inside the old town?

The technical file we prepare, and the decision we do not make

Historic Zadar is a regulated environment, and signage on a building inside the walls is governed by local rules that are more restrictive than those on the ring road. What we can do is prepare the material an application needs: a dimensioned elevation showing the sign against a photograph of the real facade, the anchoring detail with positions and depths, luminance values with the intended dimming schedule, and a specification of materials, finishes and colours. What we cannot do is tell you the outcome. Whether a projecting sign is acceptable on a given building, whether a particular depth or colour will be approved, and how long the process runs are matters for the competent office. The one piece of advice we give without hesitation is to open that conversation before manufacture rather than after, because a set of letters made to a drawing that is subsequently refused is an expensive item to have in storage.

What does salt air do to an illuminated sign?

It corrodes the parts nobody photographs

The visible face of a sign is the part least affected by a marine atmosphere. The damage happens at the back: mild steel brackets, plated screws, unsealed cable entries and the internal frame. On the peninsula and along the waterfront the sensible construction uses stainless fixings throughout, marine-grade or powder-coated aluminium for the carcass, gaskets that are actually compressed rather than merely present, and glands that point downward so that water leaves rather than enters. The rating for an exterior sign is IP65, but rating alone does not survive a decade near the sea. Two details do more than the certificate: sealing the rear face to the same standard as the front, and mounting the driver so that it sits above any point where condensate can collect. Where a sign is fitted directly onto a wall that gets spray, we also leave a ventilated gap behind it rather than trapping damp against the masonry.

How much light does a stone street actually need?

Contrast wins, output loses

In a narrow limestone street the eye adapts to a low light level, and a sign at high output does not read better, it simply glares and swallows the detail of its own lettering. The right target is the smallest brightness that gives clear separation between the illuminated element and its background, which in practice is a fraction of what the same construction would run at on a main road. Lit characters on an unlit wall outperform a large bright panel almost every time in this environment. We therefore set two or three levels rather than one. A daytime level that stands up to direct sun on an east or west-facing wall, an evening level for the hours when the centre is busiest, and a reduced or switched-off state overnight. The schedule is loaded at commissioning and can be revised afterwards over the network or over Wi-Fi without anyone returning to the building.

Which construction suits a shopfront on Kalelarga?

Depth, projection and the width of the pavement

On a pedestrian street the two constraints that decide everything are the depth the sign may project from the wall and the height at which it sits above the paving. Individual channel letters mounted flush are the least contentious solution, occupy almost no depth and look appropriate against worked stone. A shallow light box works where the frontage is modern and flat. A double-sided projecting sign is the most visible option along a street, because it is read by people walking towards it rather than past it, and it is also the option most likely to be constrained by the rules. A lit portal, which frames the whole shop opening, needs a continuous flat surface around the door and rarely finds one on a period building. Inside a modern unit it is often the cleanest answer. We normally sketch two of these options on a photograph of the actual frontage before any price is discussed, because seeing them at scale settles the question faster than a description does.

How is a fascia inside Supernova Zadar different?

The landlord's manual usually decides first

A sign for a unit inside a shopping centre is a much more constrained product than one on a street. The centre's tenant manual typically prescribes the height of the fascia band, the maximum depth, the return colour, the mounting method and sometimes the light source, and it exists so that fifty tenants do not produce fifty incompatible frontages. Our first request for such a project is that document, not a design brief. Technically the job is easier. There is no weather, so the housing is an interior construction, and the operating brightness is 700 to 800 nit rather than the several thousand a facade needs. Fitting is normally done at night within a defined window agreed with centre management, and the electrical connection comes from the unit's own supply. The programme is usually driven by the fit-out schedule rather than by manufacturing.

How often does a coastal sign need attention?

Once a year, and what that visit covers

Our recommendation for a sign within reach of sea air is an annual inspection, ideally in spring before the season. The visit covers cleaning the face, checking every fixing for corrosion, inspecting the gaskets and glands, measuring the actual output against the commissioning figures and confirming the dimming schedule is still what the owner wants. Almost every long-term failure we see on the coast could have been caught at that inspection two years earlier. Signs come with one or two years of warranty depending on construction, and with spare parts from the same batch: modules, a driver, and where relevant a spare letter face. At 574 kilometres a service journey is a two-day trip, so keeping those spares on the premises genuinely matters, and we show a local maintenance contractor how to fit them at handover. Travel and subsistence for any visit are shown as separate lines in the offer rather than absorbed into the price of the sign.
